Elite Sports Talk - Week 2 NFL Review

Week 2 Review

This episode of Elite Sports Talk (EST) provides a comprehensive review of Week 2 of the NFL season, examines key team and individual statistics, and analyzes various early-season narratives, culminating in predictions for the upcoming games. The program began by acknowledging the start of Week 3 with the Thursday Night Football matchup between the Miami Dolphins and the Buffalo Bills, noting that the AFC East rivalry game was much closer than anticipated. Reviewing Week 2, the host pointed out an uptick in game disparity; the average margin of victory increased to 10.5 points per game, up from 7.5 points in Week 1. This change was attributed to Week 1 having 13 one-score games compared to only eight in Week 2, alongside significant blowouts suffered by the Cleveland Browns, Chicago Bears, and New York Jets.

Week 2 Game Highlights

The host focused on three of the most competitive contests from Week 2:

  • New York Giants vs. Dallas Cowboys: The NFC East battle was a high-scoring affair, with the Cowboys ultimately winning 40-37. Giants quarterback Russell Wilson had an outstanding performance, completing 30 of 41 passes for 450 yards and three touchdowns, described as the "Seattle Seahawk version of Russ." Rookie Malik Neighbors contributed significantly with nine receptions for 167 yards and two touchdowns. Despite the offensive prowess, the Giants’ defense, expected to be the team’s strength, struggled. Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott went 38 of 52 for over 360 yards and two touchdowns, while CD Lamb and Jake Ferguson also posted strong receiving numbers.
  • Denver Broncos vs. Indianapolis Colts: This "crazy game" featured numerous penalties and a controversial ending. The Broncos initially won 28-26, but the outcome was dramatically reversed when a "nonsense" leverage penalty was called on a Broncos lineman after time had expired. This gave the Colts a second chance to attempt a field goal, which they made, winning 29-28. Colts running back Jonathan Taylor had a standout game, rushing 25 times for 165 yards. Broncos quarterback Bo Nix threw for 206 yards and three touchdowns, but his late interception proved costly.
  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Houston Texans: The Buccaneers secured a narrow 29-28 victory on Monday Night Football, driven by a game-winning drive led by quarterback Baker Mayfield (25 of 38 for 215 yards, two touchdowns, zero interceptions). The Texans’ defense, regarded as one of the best defensive line and DB groups in the league, kept the game close and managed to sack Mayfield four times. The Texans, however, continued to struggle with offensive line protection for CJ Stroud, who was sacked three times.

Key Statistics Through Week 2

The EST episode highlighted leaders in key statistical categories:

  • Team Offense: The Baltimore Ravens led the league in scoring (81 points), while the Buffalo Bills led in total yards (900).
  • Team Defense: The Los Angeles Rams allowed the fewest points (28). The Cleveland Browns led in fewest yards allowed (383). The New England Patriots topped the league with nine sacks, and the Jacksonville Jaguars led with five interceptions.
  • Individual Leaders: Russell Wilson led in passing yards (618). Jonathan Taylor led in rushing yards (236). Malik Neighbors led in receiving yards (238). Lamar Jackson and Jared Goff were tied for the lead in passing touchdowns (six each).

Overreactions Discussion

The host analyzed whether current perceptions of teams were justified:

  • Pittsburgh Steelers Defense: The analysis concluded that the poor performance of their high-priced defense (29th in scoring defense, 25th against the pass, allowing 63 points) is not an overreaction through two weeks.
  • Houston Texans 0-2 Start: Concerns are justified, mainly due to offensive line problems causing them to rank 32nd in scoring (only 28 total points).
  • Cincinnati Bengals Playoff Hopes: The belief that their playoff chances are finished is not an overreaction due to Joe Burrow's Grade 3 turf toe injury, which is expected to sideline him until at least mid-December (Week 15 or 16 minimum).
  • Philadelphia Eagles Repeating as Champions: This claim is deemed definitely an overreaction, despite their 2-0 start, due to their concerning offensive metrics: 29th in total yards (518) and 31st in passing yards (238 total).

Week 3 Thursday Night Recap

The episode recapped the Bills defeating the Dolphins 31-21 in the Week 3 opener. The Dolphins, however, covered the 11.5-point spread. Tua Tagovailoa threw for 146 yards, two touchdowns, and one costly interception, while Josh Allen threw for 213 yards and three touchdowns without a turnover. The Dolphins’ defense was credited with playing better than expected, especially considering they were missing their top three corners. The host argues that the Dolphins' 0-3 start does not mean their season is "completely done."

WEEKLY PICKS

  • LA Rams over the Philadelphia Eagles, citing the Rams’ 12-5 record on the East Coast under Sean McVay.
  • Washington Commanders over the Las Vegas Raiders.
  • Houston Texans over the Jacksonville Jaguars, anticipating a close game and a "revenge game" for Christian Kirk.
  • Denver Broncos over the Chargers.
  • Arizona Cardinals over the San Francisco 49ers, noting Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray is 2-1 when playing in San Francisco.
  • Baltimore Ravens over the Detroit Lions in the Monday Night Football game, based on quarterback Lamar Jackson's dominant career home record of 39-3 and his 11-2 record against NFC teams at home.

7 Detroit Lions 10-7

The episode begins with the host introducing a new intro for his YouTube channel, reflecting on an "awesome" Week 1 of the NFL season. He notes that almost every game in Week 1 was a one-score game, with 13 out of 16 being decided by a single score, two by two scores (Washington over the Giants, Detroit losing to Green Bay), and one blowout. The host humorously describes the Miami Dolphins' performance against the Indianapolis Colts as looking like a "high school team".

He then delves into game reviews:

Sunday Night Football (Baltimore Ravens vs. Buffalo Bills): The host describes the Ravens "routing" the Bills until Josh Allen, whom he calls the "MVP of the league once again," put on his "Superman cape" and took over the game. Allen completed 33 of 46 passes for 394 yards and two touchdowns, throwing 300 of those yards in the fourth quarter. This outcome "tore [him] to shreds" to see happen again to a Lamar Jackson-led team, noting that the defense gave up a quarter of a season's worth of passing yards. Jackson himself was 14 of 19 for 209 yards and two touchdowns, with 70 rushing yards and another touchdown. Derrick Henry had about 170 yards and two touchdowns on only 18 carries. For Buffalo, Zay Flowers had seven catches for 143 yards, and DeAndre Hopkins made a "one-handed catch". Keon Coleman had a very good game, looking like the player Buffalo hoped he would become. Dalton Kincaid, one of Buffalo's tight ends, also scored a touchdown. Baltimore was up by 15 points at one point, but Buffalo's comeback led the host to believe Buffalo might be the best team in the AFC this year, despite having picked Baltimore to win the Super Bowl. He feels Baltimore's defense needs to improve, noting that Lamar Jackson struggles against Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes.

Monday Night Football (Chicago Bears vs. JJ McCarthy): The host calls this game another "nailbiter," with the Chicago Bears playing "30 minutes of great football" without either of their two starting quarterbacks against JJ McCarthy in his first NFL game. McCarthy, born and raised in Chicago, single-handedly dismantled the Bears in the second half, throwing three touchdowns and gaining 143 yards, though he did throw an interception which Chicago returned for a touchdown. He also scored a rushing touchdown, bringing his total to four touchdowns. Jordan Mason had 68 rushing yards, surprising the host who expected Aaron Jones to be the primary back. For the Bears, Justin Jefferson was mostly absent but ended with four catches for 44 yards and a touchdown. DJ Moore had three catches for 68 yards and appeared to suffer a concussion but returned. Caleb Williams looked "pretty good" with 210 passing yards, two touchdowns, and 58 rushing yards. The host believes Chicago will make a run this year, attributing their strong first-half defense to them playing without starting cornerbacks.

Thursday Night Football (Washington Commanders vs. Green Bay Packers): The host anticipated a closer game, potentially a Washington win, despite it being in Green Bay. Michael Parsons was a disruptive force for Green Bay, playing "100% of the snaps". Jayden Daniels "didn't really look great" and received an MRI on his knee, finishing the game but lacking his usual mobility. Austin Eckler went to the IR for the second consecutive year after tearing his Achilles, which the host notes is a tough blow for the 30-year-old. However, rookie running back Jaka Kroski Merritt showed promise in Week 1 with 82 yards and a touchdown on two carries. Other players mentioned include Zach Ertz (six receptions, 64 yards, one touchdown), Deebo Samuel (seven catches, 44 yards, one touchdown, and a 50-yard kick return), and Terry McLaurin (five catches, 48 yards on nine targets), whose performance was somewhat disappointing. Green Bay's defense, especially their defensive backs, looked "pretty dang good" through two weeks, with players like Edgerin Cooper (10 tackles, 7 solo, 0.5 sack, 2 QB hits), Quay Walker (8 tackles), and Rashan Gary (one sack) making significant plays. Bobby Wagner also continued his consistent performance with 11 tackles, and Dorance Armstrong and Von Miller also contributed sacks. The host credits Green Bay's defense for making Washington look like an average team.

The host then moves to "Overreactions":

  • Aaron Rodgers for MVP: The host firmly calls this an "overreaction," despite Rodgers' Week 1 performance of four touchdowns, zero interceptions, and 244 yards (22 of 30) against his old team. He believes Rodgers, at 41, cannot repeat that success all season, especially with a tough schedule.
  • Tua Tagovailoa and Mike McDaniel's last year in Miami: The host believes this is "not an overreaction" and is aligned with how their season could go. He projected the Dolphins to win 10 games but miss the playoffs. A poor start (0-3, 0-4, 0-5) could lead to changes, possibly McDaniel losing his job, or even Tyreek Hill being traded due to allegations. He considers Tua a "top-tier quarterback" when healthy, with concussions being the main concern.
  • Bryce Young should be benched: The host considers this a "slight overreaction," despite Young's rough start (18 of 35 for 154 yards, one touchdown, two interceptions, a 20 QB rating, and three turnovers). He notes that Young had 40 rushing yards and the team only scored 10 points against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He projects Carolina to win only five games and attributes their struggles to offensive coordination rather than Young alone, highlighting the talent in their running back room, receivers, and offensive line.
  • Justin Fields will propel the Jets to the playoffs: The host does not consider this an "overreaction" but rather a matter of "reality" that will be told by the end of the year. Fields had a strong game (16 of 22 for 218 yards, one passing touchdown, two rushing touchdowns, 48 rushing yards, and no turnovers) in a close loss that the Jets "should have actually won". However, the host acknowledges the AFC's depth makes it difficult for any single team to guarantee a playoff spot.
  • Kansas City's kingdom will come to a crashing halt: The host says this is "possibly not an overreaction" and depends on their upcoming game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Starting 0-2, coupled with injuries (Xavier Worthy), the absence of Rashee Rice until Week 7, a struggling run game (Hunt or Pacheco), and Travis Kelce looking like he "lost a step," raises concerns. He still predicts them to make the playoffs but sees the possibility of a decline.

Playoff Predictions

The host shares his playoff predictions:

  • AFC Playoff Predictions: He projects Buffalo Bills as the number one seed, followed by the Baltimore Ravens (number two), Denver Broncos (number three), Houston Texans (number four), Cincinnati Bengals (number five), Kansas City Chiefs (number six), and Pittsburgh Steelers (number seven). He expresses frustration with Buffalo's potential dominance. He also notes the Chiefs' tough schedule, including games against the Ravens, Jaguars, Lions, and Raiders. He explicitly states he left the Chargers out of the playoffs, despite their strong Week 1 performance, as he originally only had them winning nine games.
  • NFC Playoff Predictions: He surprisingly predicts the Washington Commanders as the number one seed, despite their loss to Green Bay. He has Green Bay making the championship game but "choking" and not winning the Super Bowl. The Rams are number three, Tampa Bay Buccaneers at number four, Philadelphia Eagles at number five (with Washington winning their division). He is "high on the Arizona Cardinals" for the past two seasons, predicting them at number six, with Kyler Murray having his best statistical season. The Detroit Lions are number seven, though he notes the Minnesota Vikings could easily take that spot. He also suggests the Chicago Bears could be in playoff discussion later in the season if their defense continues to play well and their starting corners return.

Weekly Picks (Week 2)

  • He reviews his 3-4 record from Week 1. For Week 2, he is "doubling down" on teams that made him mad, picking Chicago at Detroit (hoping for starting corners to play and Ben Johnson to make a difference). He also picks Miami in a "get-right game" against New England. Other picks include Philly at Kansas City (a rare pick for him as he's not a Philly fan), Minnesota Vikings on Sunday Night Football, Houston at home against Tampa Bay, and the Chargers beating the Raiders on Monday Night Football.

The episode concludes with the host thanking viewers and reminding them to bet responsibly.

The episode began with a recap of the Thursday night opening game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys. The Philadelphia Eagles secured the win, although the Cowboys played "a little bit better than we would have thought". Passing yards were low for both teams, with Dak Prescott throwing for 188 yards (no touchdowns, no interceptions) and Jalen Hurts for 152 yards (four incompletions). Defenses played well, with Malik Hooker and Kenneth Murray Jr. leading the Cowboys in tackles (nine each), and Marshon Lattimore recording one sack for Dallas. On the Eagles' side, Zack Bowen led with nine total tackles, and new Eagle Adoree' Jackson had seven tackles. Jaylen Carter was ejected from the game after the opening kickoff. Fantasy picks were mixed; Jake Ferguson had five catches for 23 yards, while Javvante Williams impressively gained 54 yards and two touchdowns. CeeDee Lamb struggled with catches, bringing in about half of his 13 targets.

  • Bets of the Week and Straight-Up Picks: A disclaimer about responsible gambling was provided. The "bets of the week" included Carolina Panthers +3.5, Pittsburgh Steelers -3, Miami Dolphins money line, Tampa Bay Buccaneers -1.5, and Chicago Bears money line. Straight-up picks for Week 1 included the Pittsburgh Steelers, Carolina Panthers, Detroit Lions, Los Angeles Rams, Baltimore Ravens (vs. Buffalo), and Chicago Bears (vs. Minnesota).

AFC West Previews

Denver Broncos

  • As a self-proclaimed fan, Lead Sports Talk was enthusiastic about the Broncos, anticipating an even better defense than last year. Key offensive players include J.K. Dobbins, who is expected to have a strong year, and receivers Courtland Sutton, Marvin Mims Jr. (also a returner), and Troy Franklin. Evan Engram was a significant signing at tight end, having led the league in receptions two years prior. The offensive line was described as "the best in the league" by ESPN.com's pass and run block win rates, featuring Garrett Bolles and Quinn Meinerz. Defensively, the Broncos led the league with 63 sacks last year and boast players like Zach Allen, Alex Singleton, and Pat Surtain II, recognized as the "number one corner in all football". The Broncos were projected to win the division with an 11-6 record, going 3-3 in the division.

Kansas City Chiefs

  • The episode covered the Chiefs' 21-27 loss to the Chargers in their opening game, broadcast live on YouTube. Patrick Mahomes threw for 258 yards and one touchdown (to Travis Kelce) and rushed for 57 yards and another touchdown. Hollywood Brown had a standout game with 10 catches for 99 yards. Injuries affected the Chiefs, with Xavier Worthy getting hurt early and Rashee Rice suspended for the first six games. The team's defensive strength was highlighted by players such as Chris Jones and George Karlaftis. The Chiefs face a challenging schedule this year. They were projected to finish 10-7, losing one more game than Denver, but still making the playoffs with a 4-2 divisional record.

Las Vegas Raiders

  • The Raiders have a new head coach, Pete Carroll, and a new offensive coordinator, Chip Kelly. Quarterback Gino Smith is the starter, with Kenny Pickett as the backup. Running back Ashton Genty was praised, and Brock Bowers was noted for his past high production at tight end. Defensively, Maxx Crosby and Malcolm Koonce anchor the line, with Germaine Pratt and Jeremy Chinn as key additions. Despite some concerns about the offensive line, the Raiders were generously projected to finish 9-8, going 3-3 in the division.

Los Angeles Chargers

  • Following their opening win against the Chiefs, the Chargers retained their coaching staff. Justin Herbert's performance was highlighted, throwing for 318 yards and three touchdowns, along with 32 rushing yards and a touchdown. Key offensive players include Omarian Hampton (despite an early game mistake), Ladarius Manley, Quentin Johnston (two touchdowns, 79 yards), and Keenan Allen (seven catches, 68 yards, one touchdown). The offensive line features Joe Alt and Bradley Bozeman. The Chargers' defense was recognized for being "really good last year," especially in red zone defense where they were number one in three different categories. The Chargers were projected to finish 10-7.

NFC West Previews

Arizona Cardinals

  • Lead Sports Talk expressed optimism for the Cardinals, calling them a "sleeper pick" for the postseason. He believes Kyler Murray will have his best statistical season and praised key players like running back James Conner and tight end Trey McBride, who he considers the "number one tight end" in football. The offensive line was highlighted as "very good," and the defense retained much of its talent, including Buddha Baker, described as their "Energizer Bunny". The Cardinals were projected to finish 10-7 and secure a wild card spot, going 3-3 in the division.

Los Angeles Rams

  • The Rams also retained their entire coaching staff. Concerns were noted about Matthew Stafford's back issue, but Jimmy Garoppolo and Stetson Bennett were mentioned as "formidable options" at quarterback. Running back Kyren Williams was highly praised, potentially being a "top 10, top 12" player. Other key offensive players include Puka Nacua, Devonta Adams, Tutu Atwell, Jordan Whittington, and Tyler Higbee. The defense features players like Brandon Fisk, Puna Ford, Colby Turner, Brian Young, and Jared Verse. The Rams were projected to finish 10-7 and win the division with a 4-2 divisional record.

San Francisco 49ers

  • The 49ers brought in new offensive (Klay Kubiak) and defensive (Robert Saleh) coordinators. An update on Christian McCaffrey's injury indicated current frustration among fantasy owners. Brock Purdy was acknowledged as "one of the most relevant quarterbacks in the league". The team's offense includes Ricky Pearsall and George Kittle, with Brandon Aiyuk's return from injury not expected to be highly impactful immediately. Defensively, they still have stars like Nick Bosa and Fred Warner, but lost Dre Greenlaw and Talanoa Hufanga. The 49ers were projected to finish 6-11.

Seattle Seahawks

  • Seattle also has a new offensive coordinator, Clint Kubiak. While the team possesses good running backs in Kenneth Walker III and Zach Charbonnet, and receivers like Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Cooper Kupp, concerns were raised about Sam Darnold's consistency. Rookie receiver Tory Horton was highlighted as a potential breakout player. The defense was highly regarded, especially the starters, and benefited from Mike McDaniel and Aiden Durde's coaching. Despite a strong defense, due to offensive uncertainty, the Seahawks were projected to finish 4-13.

Over/Under Projections

Lead Sports Talk provided the following over/under predictions for total wins:

  • Kansas City Chiefs (11.5): Under
  • San Francisco 49ers (10.5): Under
  • Los Angeles Rams (9.5): Over
  • Los Angeles Chargers (9.5): Over
  • Denver Broncos (9.5): Over

The episode provided a comprehensive rundown of the AFC South and NFC South divisions, including record projections for each team, building on a previous episode that covered the North divisions.

AFC South

• Houston Texans

    ◦ Projection: Odds-on favorite to win the division again with a projected 10-7 record, likely securing the 4th playoff seed. The speaker has them winning over their 9.5-win total.

    ◦ Offense: Despite trading Laremy Tunsil (an odd move given CJ Stroud was the second most sacked QB last year), they've made moves to boost their running back room by acquiring Nick Chubb (who could be great if he returns to 70% of his previous form) after Joe Mixon's injury. Dameon Pierce will likely be third on the depth chart once Mixon returns. Tank Dell is expected to miss most, if not all, of the season due to MCL/ACL injuries. They've added veteran Christian Kirk to pair with Nico Collins and have rookie receivers Jaden Higgins and Jaylen Noel. Dalton Schultz is a good veteran tight end.

    ◦ Defense: Considered the best part of the team, expected to be as dominant or more so than last year, credited to DeMeco Ryans. Key players include Will Anderson, Mario Edwards, Rankins, and Denil Hunter. Their secondary is ranked #2 in the league, featuring Derek Stingley Jr., Kamari Lacer (a lockdown corner), CJ Gardner Johnson, Jimmy Ward (injured), Jalen Pitre, and Kaylin Bullock. The defense is projected for 50+ sacks and many turnovers, ranking 3rd in fantasy defense and front seven.

    ◦ Fantasy & Player Ranks: CJ Stroud is ranked #10 overall, Nico Collins #7 overall, and #6 in PPR fantasy.

    ◦ Noted Losses: Rams (opener), Ravens (Week 5), Titans (Week 11), Bills (Week 12), Chiefs, Cardinals (Week 15).

• Indianapolis Colts

    ◦ Projection: A challenging year with a projected 6-11 record, winning only two games outside their division. The speaker has them going under their 7.5-win total.

    ◦ Offense: Lost two key offensive linemen to the Vikings. The quarterback situation is contentious, with Daniel Jones named the starter over Anthony Richardson. The speaker believes Richardson is significantly more talented and should be playing to develop, drawing parallels to Eli Manning's early career. Daniel Jones' college scouting report highlighted good size, athleticism, and intelligence, but his NFL career has shown weaknesses in arm strength, delivery, decision-making, durability, and inconsistent accuracy. He's averaged only one passing touchdown per game and missed many games due to injury.

    ◦ Key Players: Jonathan Taylor is a top-10 running back, ranked #8 overall and #7 in fantasy. Receivers Michael Pittman Jr., Josh Downs, and Alec Pierce are decent, with talented tight end Tyler Warren also highlighted.

    ◦ Defense: They've brought in defensive backs, and the speaker likes their defense, but remains uncertain about the offense.

    ◦ Schedule: Faces a tough schedule early, including Miami, Denver, the Rams, and the Cardinals.

• Jacksonville Jaguars

    ◦ Projection: Projected 7-10 record, not expected to make the playoffs. The speaker leans towards them going under their 7.5-win total.

    ◦ Offense: There's speculation about Travis Hunter potentially playing both ways; the speaker suggests using him primarily as a corner and only sprinkling him into offensive packages. Brian Thomas Jr., Diami Brown, Tank Bigsby, and Travis Etienne are key offensive players. Tight end Brenton Strange is a potential threat. New offensive coordinator Liam Cohen is expected to improve the offense.

    ◦ Defense: Expected to be better than last season, with strong edge rushers like Josh Allen and Trayvon Walker, as well as players like Eric Armstead and Devin Lloyd.

    ◦ Schedule: Faces a tough year playing the entire AFC West and NFC West divisions. The speaker predicts a surprise win against Arizona in Week 12.

• Tennessee Titans

    ◦ Projection: Projected 6-11 record, including a 1-5 division record, but seen as a potential playoff team in the near future. The speaker has them going over their 5.5-win total.

    ◦ Offense: Quarterback Cameron Ward is seen as "their guy" for the future if he performs at his college level. The speaker is not high on Tony Pollard as a franchise back, but notes Tajae Spears' injury and the potential of bigger backs like K. Mullins. Calvin Ridley and Ward have shown good preseason chemistry, with Ridley appearing to be back in form. Veteran receivers Tyler Lockett and Van Jefferson provide experience. Tight end Chigoziem Okonkwo is considered a fantasy sleeper. The offensive line is "pretty decent," and the overall offense is expected to be "pretty dang good," though it will need time.

    ◦ Defense: Their defense was top 5-10 in many categories last season and is expected to be just as good this year. Key additions include Quandre Diggs, and players like Xavier Woods, Amani Hooker, and the returning L'Jarius Sneed (injured). Cody Barton, Draymont Jones, and Justin Simmons are also mentioned.

NFC South

• Atlanta Falcons

    ◦ Projection: Projected 6-11 record, with the division not expected to be closely contested. The speaker has them going under their 7.5-win total.

    ◦ Offense: Significant injuries to both their starting and backup left tackles create a major blindside concern for left-handed quarterback Michael Penix Jr.. Penix Jr. is described as "all right" and capable of winning some games. Bijan Robinson is a top-three running back. Drake London and Darnell Mooney are good receivers, and Kyle Pitts is expected to have a much larger role (including in the slot) this year, with potential to be a top-five tight end in the right system.

    ◦ Defense: Their defensive backs, including AJ Terrell Jr. and Jessie Bates, are considered decent. There's hope for the defense to improve from last season, noting the recent signing of Justin Simmons (who had a decent season) and Matthew Judon (who didn't perform as expected).

• Carolina Panthers

    ◦ Projection: Projected 5-12 record, but the speaker believes they could surprise people and hopes they win more. The speaker has them going over their 6.5-win total.

    ◦ Offense: Bryce Young showed significant improvement late last season, giving strong teams like the Chiefs, Eagles, and Broncos tough games. Their running back room is loaded with talent, including Jonathan Brooks (injured), Trevor Etienne, Rico Dowdle, and Chuba Hubbard. Receivers include Xavier Legette (who had a phenomenal year), and rookie McMillan (considered the best receiver in the draft). The offense is expected to be "pretty good" under new offensive coordinator John Evero.

    ◦ Defense: Expected to be better than last year.

    ◦ Overall: Carolina is highlighted as a team to watch closely this year due to Young's late-season progress and potential for surprise.

• New Orleans Saints

    ◦ Projection: Projected 3-14 record, with the speaker stating there's "not a lot to talk about" positively. The speaker has them going under their 4.5-win total.

    ◦ Coaching: Kellen Moore is the new head coach, seen as a potentially great coach in the long term, with a successful offensive coordinator background.

    ◦ Quarterback: Spencer Rattler won the starting job, but the speaker suggests they need a better quarterback.

    ◦ Team Issues: The team faces ongoing injury problems and significant salary cap issues, which were a factor in Sean Payton's departure.

    ◦ Key Players: Chris Olave is a talented receiver but has a history of concussions. Alvin Kamara is a great dual-threat running back. Taysom Hill, their "Swiss Army knife," is currently injured.

    ◦ Defense: Their defense is "pretty decent," with players like Cam Jordan, Pete Wernern, Demario Davis, and Chase Young. The offensive line is described as middle-of-the-pack.

• Tampa Bay Buccaneers

    ◦ Projection: Projected 9-8 record, winning the division again for the fifth or sixth straight season, and potentially reaching 10 wins. The speaker has them going over their 9.5-win total.

    ◦ Offense: Chris Godwin might not be at full strength until mid-season. A rookie receiver is expected to have a significant target share, complementing Mike Evans, who is a savvy veteran with a streak of 1,000+ receiving yards every season and could break Jerry Rice's all-time record. Bucky Irving had an "incredible, phenomenal" rookie season and is considered the best running back they've had in over a decade. Tight end Cade Otton is a fantasy sleeper with good hands. The offensive line performed well last year, contributing to strong rush and pass offenses.

    ◦ Defense: Their defense is considered underrated, featuring players like Vita Vea, YaYa Diaby, Lavonte David, Anthony Walker Jr., and Antoine Winfield Jr..

    ◦ Division Performance: Despite losing both games to the Falcons last year, they still won the division due to Atlanta's struggles and turnovers.

In summary, while the Houston Texans are expected to lead the AFC South, the other teams in both divisions face significant challenges, with coaching, quarterback play, and injuries being major factors.

Think of it like a chess game where some players have a strong opening (Texans, Bucs) and a clear strategy, while others are trying to figure out their next few moves with pieces missing or in unexpected positions (Colts, Saints), and a few are dark horses slowly building up their attack (Panthers, Titans).

Host Charlie B, the host of Elite Sports Talk, began the episode discussing the start of the NFL season (four days away), college football, and Euro basketball.

International Basketball Highlights Charlie B started his day watching Euro basketball, specifically Nikola Jokic and Team Serbia play Team Latvia. Serbia ultimately won and remained undefeated in their summer warm-up and group play games. Jokic delivered an outstanding performance, recording 39 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 assists. Charlie B noted that whenever Jokic rested, Latvia, led by Kristaps Porzingis (who played very well), would narrow Serbia's lead, but Serbia always managed to pull away. Charlie B likened watching Jokic's consistent excellence to watching Michael Jordan play in his prime.

NFL Kickoff: NFC North and AFC North Previews With the NFL season nearing its start, Charlie B provided detailed projections and analyses for teams in the NFC North and AFC North divisions.

• Chicago Bears (NFC North)

    ◦ This season marks Caleb Williams' second year as quarterback. The team boasts a new offensive system under Head Coach Ben Johnson, known for his "potent offenses" during his time in Detroit. Declan Doyle, formerly the Denver Broncos' tight end coach, is the offensive coordinator, and Dennis Allen, previously the New Orleans Saints' head coach and a long-time defensive coordinator, is now the Bears' Defensive Coordinator.

    ◦ The Bears have surrounded Williams with significant talent, including running back DeAndre Swift (who previously played under Ben Johnson in Detroit), wide receivers DJ Moore (in his second year with the Bears), second-year player Rome Odunze (who has started building chemistry with Williams), and rookie Luther Burden III. The tight end group features Cole Kmet (an "underrated tight end") and rookie Coulston Lovelin, who is expected to be one of the best young tight ends this season. The offensive line has also been revamped.

    ◦ A major challenge for Chicago is its "tough division," as the Green Bay Packers, Detroit Lions, and Minnesota Vikings all made the playoffs and won over 11 games last season. Charlie B emphasized the defense's need to perform well, especially the defensive backs, and stressed the importance of winning division games.

    ◦ Prediction: 9-8 record, finishing third in the division. Charlie B felt he was "a little generous" with some of the wins in his schedule rundown.

• Minnesota Vikings (NFC North)

    ◦ J.J. McCarthy is entering his first season as the starting quarterback. The team's receiving corps includes Justin Jefferson, whom Charlie B considers the "best wide out in the National Football League," although he is currently nursing a hamstring injury. Veteran Adam Thielen was reacquired from Carolina and, despite being 35, "looked just as dominant" last year. Rookie wide receiver Jordan Addison is suspended for the first four games. T.J. Hockenson, a "top five tight end," is returning from injury, and Charlie B expects him to receive a "boatload of targets" due to the other receivers' situations.

    ◦ The offensive line is considered one of the "better offensive lines in the league," featuring Christian Darrisaw, Brian O'Neill, Donovan Jackson, and offseason additions Ryan Kelly and Will Fry. The defensive line includes Jonathan Allen, Harrison Phillips, Javon Hargrave, and Jonathan Greenard, with Andrew Van Ginkel and veteran safety Harrison Smith also highlighted. Kevin O'Connell remains Head Coach, Wes Phillips is OC, and Brian Flores is DC.

    ◦ Prediction: 7-10 record, placing fourth in the division. This prediction accounts for McCarthy's first season and the need for him to build chemistry with his receivers.

• Baltimore Ravens (AFC North)

    ◦ Led by Lamar Jackson, whom Charlie B believes is "probably the best quarterback in the National Football League" due to his skill set. The offense is further boosted by Derrick Henry, now in his second year with Baltimore, creating a "hell of a threat" for opposing defenses. The receiving corps was also strengthened by the addition of veteran DeAndre Hopkins. The coaching staff remains unchanged, with Todd Monkin as OC and Zach Orr as DC.

    ◦ Charlie B noted their "talented offense and defense". Their schedule includes tough rematches against the Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs, as well as games against Houston and Pittsburgh.

    ◦ Prediction: 12-5 record, with a strong 5-1 conference record, suggesting they will be even more dominant than last year.

• Cincinnati Bengals (AFC North)

    ◦ The Bengals were successful in re-signing key players like Trey Hendrickson (who led the league in sacks for the past two years consecutively), T. Higgins, and Ja'Marr Chase to new deals. They changed defensive coordinators, moving on from Lou Anarumo to Al Golden, who was Notre Dame's defensive coordinator. Dan Pitcher remains OC and Zach Taylor is the Head Coach.

    ◦ In the preseason, the Bengals played Joe Burrow and Ja'Marr Chase in all three games to ensure a "fast start," aiming to avoid their historical tendency for slow starts in the first few weeks of the season. Despite losing linebacker Germaine Pratt, bringing back Hendrickson was "pivotal" for their defense. Charlie B noted their defensive backs aren't the "greatest".

    ◦ Prediction: 10-7 record, securing a playoff spot and finishing third in their division. Charlie B predicted a challenging mid-season stretch with four consecutive losses to Denver, Detroit, Green Bay, and Pittsburgh.

• Cleveland Browns (AFC North)

    ◦ Joe Flacco is the Week 1 starter, but Charlie B anticipates that either Dylan Gabriel or Shadeur Sanders will eventually take over, with Sanders potentially winning the job outright. Deshaun Watson is not expected to play at all this season. The running back situation is "interesting," with Jerome Ford as the starter and promising rookie Dylan Samson potentially splitting carries or even starting if needed. Quinnshan Jenkins, another draft pick, has not signed due to off-field allegations and may return to college, with the Browns retaining his rights. Key offensive players include Jerry Judy (coming off a 1200-yard season) and David Njoku.

    ◦ The defense is strong, led by Miles Garrett (who recently signed a big deal) and Defensive Coordinator Jim Schwartz (one of the "better DCs in the league"). Kevin Stefanski, a two-time coach of the year, remains Head Coach, with Tommy Rees as OC.

    ◦ Prediction: 7-10 record. Charlie B acknowledged the Browns would face an "extremely tough" AFC North division.

• Pittsburgh Steelers (AFC North)

    ◦ The Steelers are led by veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers under Head Coach Mike Tomlin, with Arthur Smith as OC and Terrell Austin as DC. The team acquired significant help on both offense and defense. Offensive additions include wide receiver DK Metcalf from Seattle. Aaron Rodgers reportedly reached out to Odell Beckham Jr. and possibly former Green Bay receiver Romeo Doubs.

    ◦ The defense features a "lot of talent," including Darius Slay, Jalen Ramsey (acquired via trade), Patrick Queen, Alex Highsmith, and Joey Porter Jr..

    ◦ Prediction: 10-7 record, potentially earning one of the last wild card playoff spots in a very tough division.

Fantasy Football Picks Charlie B provided his favorite fantasy football picks across three categories: Favorite Picks, Rookies & Second-Year Players, and Sleepers, covering quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers, and tight ends. He mentioned he publishes his own rankings on his blog site.

• Favorite Fantasy Picks:

    ◦ QBs:

        ▪ Kyler Murray (Ranked 9th): Highlighted his 2020 season with nearly 4,800 total yards and 37 combined touchdowns (26 passing, 11 rushing). He believes Murray will have a "really big year". Advises drafting him if top-tier QBs like Lamar or Josh Allen are unavailable.

        ▪ Bo Nix (Ranked 6th): Praised his 2023 college stats (3,775 passing yards, 29 TDs, 4 rushing TDs, 1 receiving TD). Denver's offense is "loaded" with weapons like Troy Franklin, Marvin Mims Jr., Courtland Sutton, and tight end Nevin Ingram, plus a top-ranked offensive line in pass and run block win rate.

    ◦ RBs:

        ▪ Jahmyr Gibbs (Ranked 2nd): Expected to be heavily utilized, potentially even in the slot, with a larger percentage of plays featuring both Gibbs and Montgomery on the field. Last year, he had 52 catches for 517 yards and 4 TDs, plus 1,400 rushing yards and 16 TDs.

        ▪ DeAndre Swift (Ranked 15th): Reuniting with Ben Johnson, his former OC in Detroit, who previously utilized Swift's receiving skills extensively (57 targets/46 catches in rookie year, 62 catches/452 yards/2 TDs in second year). Charlie B believes Swift will "outproduce" his 1,000+ scrimmage yards from his year in Philly. Recommends trying to trade for him due to his current ranking and expected production.

    ◦ WRs:

        ▪ Marvin Harrison Jr. (Ranked 15th): With Kyler Murray, Charlie B predicts a "Pro Bowl type year." Last year, he had 62 catches on 116 targets for nearly 900 yards and 8 TDs. Suggests stacking him with Kyler Murray.

        ▪ Courtland Sutton (Ranked 20th): Coming off his best season in terms of receptions (81 catches) and second-best in yardage (over 1,000 yards), with 8 touchdowns. He also threw a touchdown to Bo Nix last year. Sutton has 19 total touchdowns in the last two years and recently received a new deal. Recommends pairing him with Bo Nix.

    ◦ TEs:

        ▪ Trey McBride (Ranked 1st): Despite talk around Brock Bowers, Charlie B places McBride as his top tight end. He led all tight ends in combined receptions over the last two seasons with 192, surpassing Travis Kelce (190) and Evan Engram (161). Last year, he had 111 catches on 147 targets for 1,146 yards and 2 TDs (plus a rushing TD). Charlie B expects his touchdown numbers to "definitely go up" due to his 6'4", 246 lb frame and ability to break tackles.

        ▪ T.J. Hockenson (Ranked 4th): Had three seasons with 100+ targets and 700+ receiving yards (two with 900+ yards) before his injury. With Justin Jefferson nursing a hamstring and Jordan Addison suspended, Hockenson is expected to receive a "boatload of targets," potentially around 80 receptions.

• Rookies & Second-Year Players:

    ◦ QBs:

        ▪ Cam Ward (Ranked 21st, Miami): Looked "really good" in the offseason and was the first player drafted. Miami is slowly turning the team around and has weapons.

        ▪ J.J. McCarthy (Ranked 23rd, Vikings): An "unknown whatif factor." In his last two college seasons, he had 2700+ yards and 22 TDs with low interceptions (5 and 4).

    ◦ RBs:

        ▪ Ashton Genty (Ranked 6th, Boise State): Described as "incredible to watch," he had 261 yards and 29 touchdowns, falling just 17 yards shy of Barry Sanders' single-season rushing record in college. His yards after contact were more than the second-leading rusher in all of college football.

        ▪ Bucky Irving (Ranked 9th, Buccaneers): Ran for over 1,000 yards and 8 touchdowns last year for Tampa Bay, also adding 400+ receiving yards.

    ◦ WRs:

        ▪ Rome Odunze (Ranked 35th, Bears - second year): Expected to perform "levels better" than last year with Caleb Williams.

        ▪ Tora McMillan (Ranked 32nd, Panthers - rookie): Widely known as the "best receiving option in college football" last year.

    ◦ TEs:

        ▪ Tyler Warren (Ranked 12th, Colts): A "triple threat" who can run, pass, and catch, described as a potential "staple at tight end for the foreseeable future".

        ▪ Brock Bowers (Ranked 3rd, Raiders): Had an "incredible rookie season" but Charlie B doubts he will replicate his 153 targets, 112 receptions, 1,200 yards, and 5 TDs due to the Raiders adding more offensive weapons like Amari Cooper and rookie receivers.

• Sleepers:

    ◦ QBs:

        ▪ Bryce Young (Ranked 24th, Panthers): Showed potential last year with 2,652 total yards and 21 TDs to 13 turnovers. Expected to benefit from rookie receiver McMillan and other offensive pieces.

        ▪ Justin Fields (Ranked 14th, Jets): Praised for his 2022 season (over 3,000 total yards, 1,100 rushing, 2,200 passing). Charlie B believes he can improve significantly in New York under new Head Coach Aaron Glenn, reuniting with college receiver Garrett Wilson, and with Breece Hall in the backfield. He compared the potential offense to a "little bit like what the Eagles had last year".

    ◦ RBs:

        ▪ J.K. Dobbins (Ranked 28th, Broncos): A "dual threat" running back who had over 1,000 yards and 9 TDs in 13 games last year. Despite being injury-prone, he is the starter, and Shawn Payton "loves him." The addition of Darren Sproles to the coaching staff is also seen as a positive.

        ▪ Cameron Scataboo (Ranked 35th, Giants - rookie): Showed "Ashton Gentyesque" production in college, with 2,358 total yards and 25 TDs in his last season. He also threw touchdowns and has good hands. Expected to eventually split carries and then take over as the Giants' number one running back.

    ◦ WRs:

        ▪ Calvin Ridley (Ranked 24th, Titans): Was very good in Atlanta (90 catches, 1,400 yards, 9 TDs in 2020) and is the "clear-cut number one receiver" in Tennessee. Charlie B suggests buying stock in him due to his building chemistry with Cam Ward.

        ▪ Christian Kirk (Ranked 51st, Texans): Expected to be the "clear-cut number two" receiver for Houston, especially with Tank Dell injured. Despite offensive line concerns, Kirk could produce.

        ▪ Dante Thornton (Unranked, Raiders - rookie): Looked "pretty good" in the offseason. With Jacob Meyers requesting a trade and Amari Cooper joining, Thornton could still see "reasonable production" for a rookie, especially in Dynasty Leagues.

        ▪ Isaac TeSLA (Unranked, Lions - rookie): After Tim Patrick's departure, TeSLA is expected to overtake Khif Raymond as the third receiver for Detroit, adding another weapon for Jared Goff.

    ◦ TEs:

        ▪ Chigoziem Okonkwo (Ranked 20th, Titans): Another piece from the Tennessee offense to "buy some pieces from".

        ▪ Cade Otton (Ranked 16th, Buccaneers): Was a "top 10 tight end" last season despite missing three games, ranking eighth in targets (87), tied for 12th in receptions (59), and tied for 10th in touchdowns (4). He has "really good chemistry" with Baker Mayfield and is a good "safety valve" as a backup or potential starter.

Host Information Charlie B will be streaming more content on Kick, YouTube, Twitch, and Spotify, covering football, and later transitioning to basketball once the football season ends. He encouraged listeners to watch, listen, like, comment, and subscribe.
